Correcting the Coinbase Article About Ethereum Classic

The crypto exchange Coinbase has two articles about Ethereum Classic (ETC) with the titles “What Is Ethereum Classic” and “About Ethereum Classic” in the following links:

The text in both posts have some good information, however some parts have mistakes or common misconceptions that we wish to clarify.

Additionally, we would also like to add some more content to reflect a more complete picture of ETC while respecting Coinbase’s reporting format and style.

In the following sections we will go over Coinbase’s statements on both articles, we will propose corrected phrases and additional content, and express our rationale for the changes and additions.

Coinbase Statement:

Ethereum Classic is a digital currency created as a result of the hard fork of the Ethereum blockchain in July 2016. The compromise of an organization known as the DAO (which had made use of Ethereum's smart contract features) led to the Ethereum Foundation deciding to implement a hard fork. This hard fork rolled back all DAO-related transactions and allowed the original smart contract contributors to withdraw their funds.

  • Because ETC is proof of work, programmable, hard money, fully replicated, composable, and the largest in its segment, this means that DApps in ETC will be the most secure apps in the world.

Rationale:

We changed the term "international" for "global" as the nationality or jurisdiction of these public nodes is irrelevant in a truly decentra;ized blockchain as ETC.

We replaced the term "trade-off for" with "the acknowledgement of" because POW is actually the most secure consensus system in the world, therefore it is not doing any trade-offs reducing security for the possibility of 51% attacks. POS and POA systems have orders of magnitude lower security, and those are the systems who did trade-offs significantly making them less safe in exchange for saving trees or scalability.

Rationale:

We deleted references to the Thanos upgrade and the MESS feature. Thanos has been imp,memeted long ago and the MESS feature has actually been deactivated because of ETC's growth and strength.

We deleted the reference to the perceived lack of users and developers making it challenging for the network to push for new upgrades as this is not a factor. ETC is actually up to date with the EVM standard and all Ethereum upgrades!

ETC will always be state of the art technology because it shares the same technology as all EVM blockchains. It is trivial to keep the network updated.

We added the way in which ETC is addressing the perceived challenges in this section.
